Vanderschommen started in the first division in 1976 at Cercle Bruges, with whom he played four seasons. With Cercle, he was relegated in 1978 but returned to the elite a year later.
In 1980, the goalkeeper joined La Gantoise, before signing for Kortrijk a year later. He remained at KVK until 1987. Vanderschommen then defended goals for RWDM then Heirnis Ghent and Ronse.
Vanderschommen became coach of Kortrijk in the first division at the end of 1998, but was unable to prevent the club’s relegation.
Vanderschommen also played five times, in 1979 and 1980, for the Belgian Olympic team.
