US rejects Russian account of submarine incident

Amid rising tensions in Ukraine, a military incident erupted between Russia and the United States on Saturday. According to Russian media reports, Russian forces clash with a US submarine near the Kuril Islands. This is said to have entered Russian waters and then been expelled, it said. The US military attache was summoned to the Russian Defense Ministry.

The submarine entered Russian waters during a Russian naval exercise off the Kuril Islands and only left following “appropriate measures” were taken by the Russian side, the Interfax news agency reported, citing the Russian military. The incident came just hours before US President Joe Biden called Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin. The United States recently warned that Russia might attack neighboring Ukraine as early as next week. In addition to Washington, the governments of numerous other countries called on their citizens to leave Ukraine, and the USA also ordered the withdrawal of the remaining soldiers from the NATO partner country.
