US Republicans block $106 billion aid package for Israel and Ukraine: Biden ready to compromise

2023-12-07 05:30:38

The opposition US Republicans have initially blocked a billion-dollar aid package for Israel and Ukraine. They refused to support the package with a total volume of 106 billion dollars (around 98 billion euros) yesterday (local time) in a vote in the Senate in Washington. The background is the dispute over immigration policy and securing the southern border of the USA with Mexico.

Biden ready for “big compromises”.

US President Joe Biden had signaled a willingness to compromise before the congressional vote. Biden said he was ready to make “big compromises” on immigration policy so that Congress might release funding for Ukraine. The release of financial resources to support Ukraine “cannot wait any longer”; failure would be the “biggest gift” to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

From Israel to Taiwan

Biden asked Congress for a $106 billion financial package in October. It contains, among other things, $61.4 billion for Ukraine, $14.3 billion for Israel in the war once morest the radical Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas, aid for other allies such as Taiwan and funds to protect the border with Mexico. The USA is Ukraine’s main supporter. Since the start of the Russian war of aggression in February 2022, they have already delivered or promised more than $44 billion in military aid to Kiev.
