Five US special operations forces have died following their helicopter crashed in the Mediterranean during a training mission, US officials said.

The US European Command said a rescue operation had begun following the crash and an investigation into the cause of the crash was underway. The soldiers on board the helicopter were US Army special operations personnel, officials said.

The United States has deployed two aircraft carriers, the Ford and Eisenhower, along with support ships and dozens of aircraft to the eastern Mediterranean since Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel. US European Command confirmed the accident on Saturday. The helicopter that crashed has not been identified.
