USA: Ceasefire talks on Gaza continue in Qatar

– Brett McGurk, President Joe Biden’s top Middle East adviser who has participated in the talks, is in Doha for the talks aimed at stopping the conflict between Israel and Hamas, the official, who does not want to be named, told the AFP news agency.

The United States, which is mediating with Qatar and Egypt, has repeatedly expressed optimism and belief that the talks will lead to a cease-fire and prisoner exchange in Gaza. This despite the fact that Israel and Hamas have made it clear that they are far from each other.

On Monday, the ceasefire talks that had been ongoing between the parties in Egypt’s capital, Cairo, were changed to continue at the so-called working group level, according to the White House.

US National Security Adviser John Kirby then denied that the talks had broken down, something he repeated on Tuesday evening.

– We still have good faith that the talks will lead to a ceasefire as long as all parties remain committed, he says in a statement.

At least 40,476 Palestinians have been killed and 93,647 wounded since the war between Israel and Hamas broke out on October 7 last year, shows figures from Palestinian health authorities. 41.1 per cent of those killed were children, and 18.4 per cent were women, according to the overview.
