Die USA and Finland shared the same values, said Biden at a meeting with Finnish President Sauli Niinistö in Helsinki. It took him about “three seconds” to agree to Finland’s application for membership.
In view of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, Finland and Sweden applied for NATO membership in May 2022. Finland was welcomed into the alliance as the 31st member at the beginning of April, while Sweden still lacks final approval from Turkey and Hungary.
Niinistö thanks the US for its support and commends Biden for bringing unity to the NATO summit in Lithuania. “It seems that when things get serious, people understand that we have to stick together.”
