The mother and another adult smoke marijuana in the car. The four-year-old son, sitting in the back seat with his two siblings, finds his father’s gun – and shoots himself with it.

EA four-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the back seat of a car in Louisiana, while his mother and another adult were smoking marijuana in the front. An autopsy on Monday revealed the child self-inflicted the fatal head injury, Sheriff Joseph Lopinto said. The incident happened on Saturday in Westwego, a suburb of New Orleans.

In addition to the boy, his 22-month-old and almost a year-old siblings were in the car. The adults admitted to smoking marijuana. After the shot was fired, they took the child to a hospital, where he died.

The gun belonged to the father. It is believed that the boy found her under a seat. Nobody was arrested. “They had just lost a child, and it certainly wasn’t intentional,” the sheriff said. After the incident, his authority appealed to all gun owners to secure their firearms. They should not be left in cars. “These types of deaths are certainly preventable,” Lopinto said.
