Use on the Traunstein: Man camping with a hammock on a ledge

At temperatures of more than 35 degrees, a 26-year-old from the Vöcklabruck district had an adventurous idea on Saturday. The young man climbed the Traunstein in Gmunden with a hammock. To fasten these, he looked for a rock on the sea side. He wandered around the steep terrain for more than an hour. A man who was out on the Traunsee in his electric boat on a hot summer’s day observed this and feared the worst.

At around 4 p.m., the boat driver informed the Gmunden Alpine Police that apparently a person had climbed the Traunstein and was climbing back and forth aimlessly. Where the young man had been, there was no path or climbing route far and wide. Therefore, it could not be ruled out that the climber was in distress, reports the police. In order to save him from his alleged emergency, an official and mountain rescuers made their way to him. The police helicopter also flew out.

“Don’t Need Help”

The emergency services met the young man on a ledge. “He was wearing conspicuous clothing and was lying in a hammock that he had mounted on the rock,” the police report said. As it turned out, the 26-year-old wanted to camp at this location. He doesn’t need any help, will get off in the evening or the next day and drive home, he said to the emergency services, who had informed him about the prevailing alpine dangers.

At his own request, the man stayed behind. The police helicopter, which had meanwhile arrived, finally flew the mountain rescuers and the alpine police officers down into the valley using a rope in order to avoid abseiling, which was at risk of falling rocks.
