Using a smaller glass, the solution to drinking less alcohol!

THE ESSENTIAL

  • In France, 41,000 deaths were associated with alcohol consumption.
  • Alcohol is the third cause of preventable death after tobacco and pollution.

During drunken and festive evenings, it may be that the consumption can be excessive. According to a survey carried out by Public Health France, 23.7% of 18-75 year olds admit to consuming alcohol beyond the consumption guidelines. But British researchers have found a solution to sip less alcoholic beverages. In a study published in the journal Addictionscientists have revealed that the smaller the glass you drink from, the more the urge to drink decreases.

250 households

To arrive at this discovery, the authors analyzed the behavior of 250 British households, more specifically their consumption of wine. The team asked them to exchange their 75 cl bottles for smaller containers (35 cl). Large glasses have also been swapped for smaller cuts (290 ml instead of 350 ml).

Result: the alcohol consumption of the volunteers dropped dramatically after fourteen days. According to the work, the use of smaller bottles and glasses reduced wine consumption by 3.6% and 6.5%, respectively.

10 glasses of alcohol per week

More research needs to be done to show the effectiveness of this tip over the long term. “If the effects of glass size on alcohol consumption turn out to be reliable, with long-lasting effects, reducing glass size could contribute to policies to reduce drinking,” say the researchers of the study. As a reminder, health authorities recommend limiting yourself to 10 standard glasses of alcohol per week, without exceeding two glasses per day.
