A nighttime drone strike triggered a fire at Russia’s Ust-Luga Baltic port on Friday, while a separate drone attack completely halted operations at the Orsk oil refinery in Orenburg on August 11, intensifying disruptions across the country’s key energy infrastructure and fuel supply networks.

An overnight wave of unmanned aerial vehicles sparked a fire at the Ust-Luga port facility on the Baltic Sea, marking another direct blow against a vital Russian gateway for energy exports and basic commodities. The incident unfolded as Ukraine intensifies its strategic campaign targeting maritime infrastructure and export hubs along Russian maritime approaches.
According to regional reporting, Leningrad Oblast Governor Alexander Drozdenko stated in a Telegram briefing that air defense units intercepted 54 drones over the province during the hours of darkness. Although the defensive engagement failed to prevent debris from igniting a fire within the port zone, officials confirmed that emergency responses successfully managed the fallout.

The Ust-Luga complex handles heavy shipments of crude oil, refined petroleum products, coal, fertilizers, and grain, alongside a major refinery operated by Novatek. This facility has repeatedly drawn drone strikes, including early July attacks that temporarily halted Novatek operations and suspended crude loading.
Shutdown at the Orsk Oil Refinery
While port authorities managed the Baltic Sea blaze, southeastern Russia absorbed a structural blow. Orenburg regional governor Yevgeny Solntsev announced that a drone strike on August 11 severely crippled the Orsk oil refinery, rendering the damaged sections entirely beyond repair. The initial impact triggered a fire at the plant without causing immediate casualties, but subsequent technical evaluations confirmed a loss of capacity.
