A few minutes before her death, a teacher was on the phone with her police officer husband, who was stationed in front of the elementary school.

Eva Mireles was in her class when the killer started to open fire. The attack, which lasted more than an hour, killed 21 people, including 19 students and 2 teachers.

During the attack, Ms. Mireles called her husband, Ruben Ruiz, who was among the responders to the call for help, The New York Times reported.

A wall separated the couple, who were about to have their very last conversation.

It’s unclear how long Mireles and Ruiz spoke for, but Uvalde County Judge Bill Mitchell told reporters the teacher apparently described the scene to her husband.

“He’s outside hearing his wife say ‘I’m dying,'” he said.

“Her smile and personality never went unnoticed while she was there,” her family wrote in an online obituary.
