In February 2023, the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, announced a “generalized” vaccination campaign in middle schools for fifth grade students against the papillomavirus.

Drawing on its experience with the Covid-19 vaccination center, the city of Meaux volunteered to supervise operations in the north of Seine-et-Marne. Interview with Christian Allard, Deputy for Sports, Health and Development of Medical Professions.

La Marne: When did this campaign start?

Christian Allard: We started the vaccination campaign on Tuesday October 10, 2023 with high schools in Meaux. We will extend beyond the Pays de Meaux: Lognes, Coulommiers, Champs-sur-Marne, La Ferté-sous-Jouarre, Chelles…

In total, around 12,000 students are affected by vaccination against the papillomavirus in the 84 colleges, public and private, that we will visit until the Christmas holidays. Students must have parental authorization.

There will be latecomers, children who will not have authorization for the first dose. But a second must be injected 6 months later, children will be able to begin their vaccination journey at that time. Our goal is to have vaccinated 30% of 5th grade students.

Why did the city of Meaux decide to take charge of vaccinating middle school students?

CA: 6 months ago, when the president announced that 5th graders would be offered vaccination, I said to myself “finally!” » We are at least 20 years behind in vaccination against papillomavirus compared to other countries.

The vaccine has existed for a long time, but for reasons that are, in my opinion, incomprehensible, we have not officially started vaccination. This must not be a “one shot”, this campaign must be renewed! It’s an unmissable event.

The day after the President of the Republic’s speech, I warned the ARS (Regional Health Agency) that we were ready to take care of northern Seine-et-Marne. It’s a new adventure after our 18 months of vaccinations against Covid-19.

But this is different, mobile teams go directly to schools. I contacted the nurses and doctors who trusted us with the vaccination center.

Everyone was enthusiastic. Health professionals have understood the importance of vaccination.

Several years ago, complaints were filed by people who claimed to be victims of Gardasil, a vaccine against cervical cancer…

CA: This vaccine against the papillomavirus has real usefulness: we can rely on the experience of other countries. The facts are stubborn! For example, cases of cervical cancer have almost disappeared in South Africa, a rare country to have systematized vaccination.

All medications are likely to have side effects.

Why is it important to vaccinate adolescents?

CA: The papillomavirus is a sexually transmitted virus responsible for cervical cancers, but also penile tumors, anal canal tumors or ENT (otolaryngeal) cancers, linked to different sexual practices. .

These are serious cancers with aggressive signs of resistance. There is a real issue for young people. This is why we must vaccinate adolescents before their first sexual intercourse, in the 11-14 year old range, girls and boys.

We hope that there will be enough communication around the papillomavirus vaccine for future 5th grade students to want to be vaccinated. We must raise as much awareness as possible so that this campaign does not disappear and that we win for the future of our children.
