MADRID (AP) — Hugo Duro scored a first-half brace to lead Valencia’s 3-0 win over Atlético Madrid on Saturday, which suffered its first setback in the Spanish league.
Duro opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a sweeping shot inside the area that overshot goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
The striker of the Che team scored his second goal in the 34th, after receiving a pass filtered through the center that he finished on goal after failures in the defenders’ marking.
Javi Guerra extended the victory in the 54th, after taking a shot from outside the area that hit mid-height next to one of the posts before Oblak’s sterile shot.
The defeat was a hard setback for Atlético de Madrid, who before this match and the break for the FIFA Date had beaten Rayo Vallecano 7-0 away. With this defeat they were in seventh position with seven points.
Valencia ended nine years without beating Atlético de Madrid in official competitions – 17 games since October 4, 2014 – and two defeats in a row to move up to fifth place with nine points.
“Everything was missing today, intensity, I don’t know, attitude,” Oblak said. “Valencia came in much better than us. We lost 3-0 and I am very sorry, words do not matter with this.”
Duro has scored 12 goals during his time in the first division, of which five have been against the Atlético de Madrid defense.
For Atlético de Madrid there was more bad news when Thomas Lemar regretfully asked for his change shortly before half-time after suffering a serious injury to his right leg, which forced him to leave on a stretcher.
The colchoneros suffered this setback a week before facing Real Madrid in the first of the season’s derbies and in the middle of the week they visit Lazio at the start of the Champions League
ATHELTIC GOALS AT HOME
Gorka Guruzeta (66th minute), Asier Villalibre (68th) and Iñaki Williams (90th) scored the goals with which Athletic Bilbao beat Cádiz 3-0 at home.
The Basque team reached 10 points to provisionally assume second position in the championship; Cádiz stagnated in the ninth step with seven units.
