“Valkyria” debuts at the National Opera 2024-02-23 07:22:34

Richard Wagner’s masterpiece is presented in an international co-production with the Royal Danish Opera. From March 10 and for six performances in the Stavros Niarchos Hall, under the musical direction of Philippe Oghen and directed by the distinguished British director John Fuljames, who has directed Don Giovanni and Gianni Scicchi for the ELLS.

A show lasting five hours and fifteen minutes, (with two intermissions) for absolute lovers of the genre.

“We set the opera in a fictional universe that balances the mythical with the real,” notes the director, regarding the way he approached Valkyrie and continues: “This world resonates today without being limited to a specific time. and place. The central character of the opera is actually Botan – as he comes to terms with the consequences of his choices, realizing that his grand plan will fall apart and that he must abandon first his son and then his daughter and face his own death .

The Valkyrie is the first work by Richard Wagner to be presented in the new premises of the National Opera at the SNFCC. This is the second part of Wagner’s Ring of the Nibelung tetralogy and certainly the most popular. Very often Valkyria is presented as a standalone, as it includes exciting music of exceptional quality and seduction and is characterized as a work that is moving, but also dramatically condensed. The composition of this colossal work, modeled after Aeschylus’ Oresteia trilogy, occupied Wagner for many years. It is the fruit of the ideological ferments that dominated the German space during the middle of the 19th century and of which the composer participated in the period from 1841 to 1849 during his stay in Dresden.

The creative team is rounded out by associate director Johanne Holten, set and costume designer Tom Scutt, associate set designer David Allen and lighting designer DM Wood. It is conducted by the acclaimed French conductor Philippe Auguin, who has distinguished himself internationally in Wagner’s work.

For the extremely demanding main roles of the work, the National Opera has secured leading Wagnerian singers of international renown. The German Stefan Finke, one of the most accomplished tenors of our time, will perform the role of Sigmund. He has sung all the major Wagnerian tenor roles and, since making his Cologne Opera debut as Siegfried in The Ring of the Nibelung in 2006, has performed the role in the opera of the same name over 30 times and in Twilight of the Gods more than 25 times.

The acclaimed Greek deep-voiced Petros Magoulas interprets the role of Huding. The role of Votan is performed by the Finnish baritone Tomi Hakala. After his appearance in Athens with the ELLS, he will travel – to perform Votan – in November 2024 to Australia.

In the role of Ziglinte we meet the excellent British dramatic soprano Alison Oakes, who has in her repertoire a multitude of roles with different vocal and interpretive requirements.

Catherine Foster, established worldwide as one of the best Brünnchilds of our time, has distinguished herself as few performers internationally in the Wagnerian repertoire.

The role of Frika will be shared by middle voices Marina Prudenskaya and Hannah Fischer.
