“Vandalism and Burglary on LGTBQI+ Bars in Brussels: Lack of Police Responsiveness?”

The Stammbar at rue Marché au Charbon, L’Agenda at Plattensteen, Le Crazy Circle in Ixelles. This weekend, three LGTBQI+ bars suffered varying degrees of vandalism and one burglary. A broken window for the first two, a burglary with breaking and entering for the third.

”It happened around 10am”, testifies the manager of the Crazy Circle Laila Wald. “Two men forced open the roller shutter and then kicked into the glass door, which shattered into a thousand pieces. Once in the establishment, the thief searched everywhere before finding the case. Fortunately, it was empty. Just a little change and a 20 euro note. He even wanted to take the laptop but finally left it…” This is the first time that the Crazy Circle has been the victim of a burglary. Complaint was filed by the manager.

The vandalism suffered by the two establishments in the hypercentre of Brussels is not linked, assures the manager of the Stammbar Frédéric Da Soghe. Who nevertheless deplores the lack of responsiveness of the police. “There is a certain feeling of impunity because the police are slow to react when we call them for these kinds of problems”, he explains.

Thus, on Saturday evening, he showed his dismay on social networks. Faced with a particularly aggressive person in front of the entrance to the Dolores Bar, still rue Marché au Charbon, he called the police: “Good evening, we have a person at a terrace who provokes people with insulting remarks and who films to have an aggressive reaction! This person is well known to your services”. The police respond that they are sending a patrol. “1h30 later, still no patrol or assistance. Fortunately, we are more persuasive towards problematic people than towards the Brussels police… We will still say that the bar staff are aggressive.”

“Yet the police are right in front. But she rarely comes. It may be easier to let them go because these aggressive people will not be prosecuted anyway.”
