As the global race for physical AI accelerates, the German mechanical engineering association VDMA warned that Europe risks losing its technological sovereignty in humanoid robotics. Citing massive global investments, the industry body is urging politicians and business leaders to establish a localized, resilient production ecosystem for critical components.
The Scaling Bottleneck in European Mechatronics
Europe boasts deep-rooted academic research, strong industry companies, and powerful startups—particularly within the machine and plant engineering sectors. Yet, according to VDMA Deputy Managing Director Hartmut Rauen, the continent faces a critical execution gap.
Innovation is not translating into mass production fast enough. While foundational research hubs across the European Union routinely produce important innovations, bridging the chasm toward high-volume industrial scaling remains an uphill battle. The VDMA points directly to scaling in China and local-content regulations in the United States as structural pressures forcing Europe’s hand.

Manufacturing the Physical AI Stack
Building an independent European value chain for humanoid systems requires domestic production of critical components. Without localized fabrication pipelines for these core components, European automation firms remain vulnerable to global supply chain shocks. The VDMA represents approximately 3,500 German and European mechanical engineering companies. Across the EU-27, this industrial base employs roughly 3 million people—including more than 1.2 million in Germany—and generates an annual turnover of around 900 billion euros within the European Union, according to the association’s figures.
