The Vegas Golden Knights confirmed Wednesday night the hiring of Dominique Ducharme and Joel Ward as assistants to head coach Bruce Cassidy.

Jean-Charles Lajoie had indicated for the first time on Tuesday that Ducharme would be back behind the bench of a Western team of the National Hockey League.

“We are extremely pleased to have Dominique and Joel join our coaching staff in Vegas. Dominique brings a wealth of coaching experience to our organization and has proven himself to be an effective leader on many levels,” Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon said in a statement late Wednesday.

His time as head coach of the Montreal Canadiens lasted less than a year. He was fired by the Habs on February 9, 2022.

Ducharme had succeeded Claude Julien as CH head coach in February 2021. The main interested party then led the Montreal club to the Stanley Cup final.

The Joliette native joined the Canadiens during the 2018-2019 season as an assistant coach.

Before making the leap to the big leagues, the Joliette native was at the helm of the Halifax Mooseheads and Drummondville Voltigeurs in the QMJHL. He also lifted the Memorial Cup in 2013 with the Mooseheads.

The 50-year-old led the Canadian team to two World Junior Championship medals, including gold in 2018.
