The month of April has been practically unsuitable for Spanish factories, due to the total closure caused by the expansion of the coronavirus pandemic. Of the five weeks of April, only eight of the 17 Spanish vehicle factories were started up, in stages, from 20 last month and managed to take 4,844 units off their production lines, which represents a reduction of 97 , 8% compared to the same month of the previous year, in line with the data that ABC announced at the end of last month.
In the first four months of the year, vehicle production amounted to 652,057 units, 33.6% less than in the same quarter of the previous year. The data shows the situation of special weakness in which the Spanish automotive industry is, the third industrial sector in the country and the only one that was completely paralyzed when the state of alarm was decreed on March 16.
“The figures of the return to activity indicate the complexity of the value chain of this sector since the first factories did not open a production shift until at least two weeks after the end of the hibernation period and some have been closed for two months , due to the need for activity to be resumed also in the components industry and in dealers and workshops and in the absence of opening of the activity of selling vehicles in dealerships, “the automobile company Anfac said in a statement. In it, they highlighted that «the lack of demand in Spain also paralyzes factories. Not surprisingly, about 25% of Spanish production stays in the country and therefore, it is necessary to promote a national shock plan as soon as possible with measures to stimulate demand and maintain the industry.
Exports in April plummeted to the same extent as production. 3,753 vehicles were shipped outside Spanish borders, 98% less than in the same month last year. In the year as a whole, 533,128 units were exported, 32.1% less than in the same period of the previous year.
