Veldeman: Leading Bed Manufacturer Declared Bankrupt – Impact on Employees and Future Prospects

2023-07-18 13:54:38

The company court declared the manufacturer of beds, box springs and mattresses Veldeman bankrupt. Around 450 people work for the group, including 230 in Belgium. Some of them might work once more in the event of recovery.

Veldeman was founded in 1954 in Hasselt and over the years has become one of the largest employers in Limburg. Last year, the group achieved a turnover of 20 million euros.

The group struggled following the full takeover of Maison de la Literie in 2022, a well-known retailer in France with a network of 300 specialist bedding stores.

Along with the French founding Elmalek family, Veldeman had been co-shareholders for years in Maison de la Literie, which had been struggling with financial problems for some time. Consequently, the Veldeman group carried out several capital increases at the French distributor. Last October, the Veldeman group fully took over the struggling Maison de la Literie. After the takeover, financial problems were revealed in the French subsidiary.

The rise in raw materials following the coronavirus crisis and the rise in energy prices have further weighed on the company.
