Verdi’s “Don Carlo” premieres in Klosterneuburg on Saturday. Günther Groissböck sings Philipp II – and also directs it himself. How it came regarding and what he loves regarding this work.

Die Presse: How did it come regarding that you are now directing alongside your singing career?

Günther Groissböck: That came from a “crazy idea” by Roland Geyer, the former director at the Theater an der Wien. He saw the passion and energy I put into the scenic work. He infected me with the idea. The first result was my directing of the “Tristan Experiment” in the chamber opera. But then I would also like to be there as a singer. The captain is the last to leave the ship, but directors are often gone following the premiere. I think: The one who has “crimed” everything should also be there until the end. And it’s nice to see how a production grows from performance to performance. There’s a different quality to witnessing this tire.

Why did you choose “Don Carlo” as the second production?
