QUITO.- Verónica Sarauz, widow of Fernando Villavicencio, who was running for President of Ecuador and who was assassinated this Wednesday, when asked about who could be behind the assassination, recalled that correísmo has links with drug gangs and that former Colombian senator Piedad Córdoba, who was denounced by Villavicencio within the Alex Saab plot, also threatened her husband.

Villavicencio’s wife was interviewed on BLU Radio de Colombia on the morning of August 11. The journalist recalled that Villavicencio denounced acts of corruption by several powerful politicians, including the former president of Ecuador, Rafael Correa. “Of all those enemies, who do they feel they are behind?” he asked Sarauz.

“I am going to say it very clearly: correísmo. Correísmo has ties to criminal gangs in this country. Gangs that have taken over entire provinces, drug gangs,” he stated.

He added that Villavicencio not only investigated Ecuadorian politicians but also politicians from the region. “Fernando not only declared war on corrupt politicians in this country (Ecuador). He also had problems with Piedad Córdoba in Colombia. She also threatened my husband that she was going to make him disappear.”

He recalled the crossroads that Villavicencio and Córdoba had on the X social network, when he denounced the plot involving the alleged front man of the Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro and that linked Córdoba. “You can review the previous tweets, a couple of years ago they had very strong friction,” he said.

He also reiterated that “I am not saying that she was part of this, but she was one of the people that Fernando denounced for corruption and she threatened him.”

He said that investigations should find the culprits. “My husband is dead and the culprits, the masterminds, have to appear,” she said.

She added that, due to her husband’s level of risk, she remembered the similes with the Colombian candidate Carlos Galán, who was also assassinated in the campaign.

“(Fernando) had friction with a member of the Latin Kings that he represented in the National Assembly (he is referring to Ronny Aleaga, a former legislator for Correa’s party). He had run-ins with a man with the last name Jordan (referring to Xavier Jordan) who lives in Miami and is also involved in corruption… and drug trafficking,” said Sarauz.
