Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler sharply criticizes the states’ decision to abandon the government’s 2.5 hectare target for the land strategy.

Twelve hectares of nature disappear every day in Austria. When it comes to the question of how much land should be used in Austria in the future, the government and the states cannot seem to find a common denominator. Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens) came to the ZiB2 on Friday evening.

Kogler sharply criticized the states’ decision to distance themselves from the government’s 2.5 hectare target in the land strategy: “It’s called land for fields and not for unnecessary parking spaces,” he said in the ORF– Broadcast of a “time for repentance”.

“Sorry state governors”

On Thursday, the federal states decided to go it alone and adopted their own strategy, abandoning the binding target of a maximum of 2.5 hectares of net consumption per day from 2030. The community association also opposed this goal.

Kogler is not particularly impressed by the agreement between the states: “Everyone can decide anything.” The Vice Chancellor doesn’t think it’s a bad thing that the states have presented plans, but he clearly expects action: “Just because you find the platform doesn’t mean it’s an achievement, sorry state governors.”

However, Kogler is optimistic that pressure from the population and the media will ultimately be enough: “In the end, the states will have to give in.” Because in the interests of the population, things cannot continue to be converted into areas or even concreted over.
