The City of Victoriaville has decided to offer free swimming lessons in its public swimming pools this summer, to prevent drowning.

Nearly 160 registrations were recorded for the courses that began on July 3 in the region’s outdoor pools. Last year, 78 young swimmers had their first swimming lesson free.

In an interview with QUB radio with Marie Montpetit, the mayor of Victoriaville, Antoine Tardif, explained the city’s decision, as part of drowning prevention week, from July 16 to 22.

“The initiative was born from the desire to get our young people moving and to maximize the use of our municipal swimming pools, but also to prevent drownings. […]. We thought it was a great initiative to set up,” he said.

“It is offered to the entire population, but it is mainly young people who register, continued Antoine Tardif. Classes are offered twice a week in the five municipal swimming pools.

The initiative cost the city of Victoriaville $10,000.

“On an operating budget of $105 million, we agree that it is still minimal, indicated Antoine Tardif. It is a measure which, in my opinion, is so promising. The welcome was very warm from the population and the families were very happy.”

“For me, it’s not an expense, it’s an investment,” he added.
