A Chinese study found that daily exposure to video games for 1.2 hours increased the risk of erectile dysfunction in men. The study included more than 200,000 men aged 40 to 69 who engaged in leisure activities such as watching television, driving or playing video games. Researchers measured levels of sex hormones, including testosterone and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), as well as levels of depression and anxiety. They found that computer use and video games were associated with lower levels of FSH in the participants’ blood.

Spending 1.2 hours a day playing video games and using the computer was linked to a 3.5-fold increased risk of erectile dysfunction. Lower FSH levels were also associated with decreased sexual desire, infertility, and lower energy. However, watching TV or driving has not been associated with an increased risk of erectile dysfunction. The researchers concluded that there was a causal relationship between computer use and the risk of erectile dysfunction, but emphasized the need for further research to establish a specific causal relationship.
