Rudolf Müllner defeated Hermann Rohrmoser in the mayoral election with 33 votes. In the interview, the new local manager talks about upcoming projects and explains why it can still tolerate a luxury hotel.
How were the first few weeks as the newly elected mayor? Rudolf Müllner (WPM): It’s a great honor and something very special. The office of mayor is very multifaceted and demanding. The first 14 days were intense because many citizens wanted to talk to the newly elected mayor. I have now settled in very well.
To what extent were you surprised by the election results? It is difficult against an incumbent mayor, but the success did not necessarily come as a surprise. I certainly also benefited from the fact that the ÖVP did not have its own candidate. From a democratic perspective, it was important for the WPM to put forward an opposing candidate.
The ÖVP has six mandates, six the SPÖ, five your WPM. Even if it’s close: you are mayor of the third strongest force. What does this mean for your future work? That’s not the deciding factor for me. The ÖVP only has 49 votes more, the sixth mandate was narrowly for the SPÖ. So you can’t really talk about the strongest and weakest force, they’re basically equal. Whether I have a majority or not: It is important to me that there is a lot of discussion and discussion with the community representatives and that positive votes for the community can be voted on in the meetings.
How will people recognize your handwriting? I want there to be more transparency, honesty and openness, and better public relations work overall. We are currently one of the few communities that does not have a community newspaper. I want to change that and work it out with the parliamentary groups. I got the impression from the population that many people didn’t feel that well informed.
Which projects will be tackled in the near future? One topic is the football field, for which the lease expires in 2030. It is important to start negotiating now as to how things will proceed. Then we want a discounted summer card for the locals for the tourist infrastructure; When it comes to senior care, it’s about discussions with Saalfelden about setting up a care association; the parking situation is a point that needs to be revised; We have to clarify the future use of the old fire station and the recycling center will soon be modernized.
Has the tourist development of Maria Alm reached its zenith? In Hinterthal, a five-star hotel is still being built on an area that has long been earmarked for this purpose in the REK. The plans are currently being examined by the state of Salzburg. We don’t have any offerings in this segment in Maria Alm yet, but it would be okay. Overall, we are very well positioned and – if so – we have to focus more on further improving quality than on increasing the number of beds.
