Vienna Kindergarten Abuse Scandal: New Allegations Surface After Previous Investigation

A kindergarten worker, who was under criminal investigation until December 2023 following allegations of abuse, is once again the focus of allegations. New incriminatory acts are said to have occurred three days after the proceedings were discontinued.

A teacher at a municipal kindergarten in Vienna-Penzing, who was under criminal investigation until December 2023 following allegations of abuse, is now confronted with new allegations. The responsible municipal department 11 (MA 11) confirmed a corresponding “Vienna Today” report on Thursday. New incriminatory acts are said to have occurred three days after the child and youth welfare proceedings were discontinued.

Specifically, this is supposed to be about allegations of sexual abuse, as MA 11 emphasized. “A child told another child about it during a play situation,” said Pöschmann.

“We have reopened the investigation process”

“We have therefore reopened the investigation by MA 11 and submitted a corresponding statement of facts to the Vienna public prosecutor’s office,” said spokeswoman Ingrid Pöschmann in the evening. Pöschmann emphasized, however, that the teacher was never working in the kindergarten during these three days. The man has not worked with children since 2021, the spokeswoman said.

The public prosecutor’s office could no longer verify the existence of a corresponding statement of facts late on Thursday evening. At the same time, the administrative procedure is also running through child and youth welfare. As part of this, parents and kindergarten staff will be interviewed again.

Explosive allegations

The new allegations are certainly explosive. It was only last December that the public prosecutor’s office discontinued proceedings against the man who has now been accused again and another educator due to allegations from 2021 regarding the suspicion of sexual abuse of minors and partly because of the suspicion of deprivation of liberty. “The interrogations of all those involved and further investigative measures were unable to substantiate the suspicion raised,” the authority said in a statement at the time. The report from a psychological expert was essential for this, but in discussions with the children he was unable to find any statements that corroborated the suspicion.

The case caused a stir in 2022. In the course of the case, the management of the municipal kindergartens (MA 10) was also replaced. The responsible city councilor Christoph Wiederkehr (NEOS) was dissatisfied with the crisis management surrounding the suspected case at the time. (APA)
