Riccardo Muti will open the Ravenna Festival with the Vienna Philharmonic for the first time. On May 11, the maestro will conduct the Vienna Philharmonic in the opening concert of the 19th edition of the festival, the festival announced. Mozart’s “Haffner” Symphony No. 35 and Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 will be played.

Advance sales for the concert begin on January 11th. The Ravenna Festival program will be announced on February 24th. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s first participation in the Ravenna Festival dates back to 1992. The concert in May will be the Vienna Philharmonic’s twelfth appearance in Ravenna. The last one took place in 2021, the year in which the Philharmonic celebrated the 50th anniversary of its collaboration with Muti.

Muti completed the “Autumn Trilogy” on Friday evening at the Teatro Dante Alighieri in Ravenna. In a single week he conducted Vincenzo Bellini’s opera “Norma”, Verdi’s “Nabucco” and a gala evening with Verdi arias with the youth orchestra “Luigi Cherubini”. Muti was named conductor for life of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in June. The maestro ended his 13-year tenure as music director of the orchestra with three concerts.
