In Vietnam, a man with a live tiger in his car was caught by the police. The big cat, weighing more than 200 kilos, was discovered in an extremely small iron cage that the 43-year-old had stowed in his van, as the state newspaper “Tuoi Tre” reported on Tuesday.

Images circulated in the media showed that the tiger had virtually no room to move.

It was said that the man behaved suspiciously, which is why the police asked him to stop. He then fled and was only stopped after a chase. The Vietnamese admitted that he was supposed to transport the tiger from the city of Dong Ha to the Huong Hoa district on the border with Laos for the equivalent of around 100 francs.

Tiger bone used in medicine

In the Southeast Asian country, parts of wild animals – in addition to tiger bones, bear bile and various parts of monkeys – are used in traditional medicine. The trade is flourishing: In recent years, Vietnamese police have uncovered numerous cases related to the illegal breeding, trafficking and killing of tigers.

The predators are listed as “endangered” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Laws in Vietnam allow prison sentences of up to 15 years for illegal wildlife trafficking.
