At the Basilica of St. Bartholomew, located on the Tiber Island in Rome, a vigil is held for the martyred missionaries on March 26th from 6:30 p.m. The prayer service is organized under the leadership of the Rome Vicariate. Many pilgrims visit and pray at this basilica every day as it is a basilica specially commemorating the martyrs of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The prayer will be led by Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, Prefect of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life. Apart from the Catholic martyrs, members of the Orthodox, Anglican and Evangelical churches who sacrificed their lives for the faith and the Gospel will also be commemorated in a special prayer.

March 24th is observed as Missionary Martyrs Day. Saint Romero, the bishop of El Salvador, was killed by assailants during the Mass on March 24, 1980. It is in his memory that the church decided to remember the martyred missionaries on that day and pray for them. The goodness of mankind against evil is revealed in every martyrdom.
