The good surprise of the Australian Open in the Swiss camp came from the women’s draw. A few hours after the ousting of Stan Wawrinka, immediately eliminated by the French Adrian Mannarino in five sets, Zurich’s Viktorija Golubic qualified for the second round by beating Russian Veronika Kudermetova in three sets (7-6 1- 6 6-1). Facing the number 15 seed, Goluvic, 90th in the world, defied the predictions by playing a game where she alternated between the good and the less good but without ever losing the thread of the match.
For Golubic, a player with a nice touch on the ball and an above-average tactical sense but handicapped by physical power lower than that of most of her rivals, matches are played a lot on service. If she can maintain a good percentage of first serves, if she can win her face-offs without too much effort, then there can be a “match” against anyone.
