The art and architecture center is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The opportunity to discover a unique and unclassifiable place.
An emblematic place of artistic creation in France, the Villa Noailles in Hyères in the Var is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2023. The art center has been celebrating the event since March 29 with “Fragments of architecture”, an installation devoted to the history of the Villa, an architectural work commissioned by the Viscount of Noailles in 1923. The exhibition highlights ten fragments designed by the architect Robert Mallet-Stevens, with plans, photographs and correspondence from the period. Mirroring these creations, ten contemporary artists offer their own reinterpretation, in particular the Room of Flowers, revised by the Italian architects of HPO.
Only a few days left to also take advantage of the “Portraits of Charles and Marie Laure de Noailles” exhibition. Until April 30, visitors can enjoy performances of the villa’s founding couple by contemporary artists.
A center of artistic creation
The Villa Noailles project was born in 1923, when Charles de Noailles receives a large piece of land from his mother on the occasion of his marriage. The couple then commissioned the young architect Robert Mallet-Stevens “a small house interesting to live in”. An architectural jewel, the place became in the 1920s a place of artistic encounters, encouraged by the patronage couple.
Andre Gide, Jean Cocteau, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali are all big names who once took over the white walls of the Villa Noailles. Sold to the municipality and restored in 1973, the place became an art center in 2003, encouraging artistic creation ever since, with a program centered around architecture, fashion and music.
From July 21 to 23, 2023, the Midi Festival will be back in Hyères for its 18th edition. The Porridge Radio, Aime Simone and Bar Italia groups are expected on the open-air stage for three days of concerts.
