Vincent Wieser can celebrate his first European Cup victory. The Styrian won the first of two downhill runs in Santa Caterina 0.49 seconds ahead of his compatriot Manuel Traninger – making it a Styrian double victory in Italy. The Swiss Livio Hiltbrand secured third place (+0.57 seconds). The ÖSV team was pleased with a strong result: with Stefan Rieser in fifth place, Felix Hacker in sixth place and Stefan Eichberger in tenth place, five Austrians placed in the top ten.

“Today’s win came as a surprise and it’s an incredible feeling. “I had a great run and I’m just happy with how today went,” said Wieser, whose goal was to establish himself on the second level this year.

This was achieved faster than planned. “It was difficult because it was snowing and the descent, which was supposed to have taken place on Wednesday, was postponed until today. Nobody knew how it would all turn out,” said the Schladminger, and added: “We obviously made the best of it.” Remarkable: So far, a 14th place (in Narvik) was the best result in the European Cup, now he has to record a victory. One with “Oops”: I fell at the finish and at first I didn’t know my way around. I had to ask my teammates what I was. Than they meant. I couldn’t believe that I was leading.” What’s more, the victory was anything but close: the army athlete was 0.49 seconds ahead of his teammate.
