Cairo: Grindr, an LGBTQ+ dating app in Egypt, is reportedly preparing to issue warning messages to its users. Al Jazeera reported that Grindr said the decision comes amid increasing violence once morest LGBTQI communities in the country.
From now on, warning messages will appear in English and Arabic while logging into the app. Egyptian police were recently found to be using apps like Grindr to locate people from the LGBTQ+ community. In the background of this, the company has come up with precautionary measures.
‘Egyptian police have been found to be widely collecting information of gay, bi and trans people on digital platforms as well. For that, fake accounts are being created and accounts of persons who were arrested in the first place are being used. Therefore, necessary precautions should be taken both online and offline,’ says the warning issued by Grindr.
According to the report released by Al Jazeera, despite the fact that homosexuality is not prohibited by law, there are widespread attacks once morest the LGBTQ+ communities in Egypt with the help of the police. In 2017, Egyptian police arrested seven activists for raising the rainbow flag.
Apart from that, the Al Jazeera report also states that hate campaigns once morest the LGBTQ+ communities are widely spread through social media accounts in Egypt.
