Virgin Atlantic has officially been named the official airline of Team GB for the LA 2028 Olympic Games, officially bringing a dramatic close to British Airways’ two-decade dominance over the high-profile partnership.
A New Flight Path to California
As athletes and support staff look toward the horizon in less than two years’ time, Sir Richard Branson’s carrier will take over the vital task of transporting Team GB and ParalympicsGB to and from the Games. The agreement marks a major shift in elite sports sponsorship, ending a golden run for British Airways that began back with the Beijing 2008 Games and famously coincided with some of the most decorated eras in British Olympic and Paralympic history.
To celebrate the changing of the guard, Branson stepped directly into the sporting arena. He joined Team GB artistic gymnast Jake Jarman and Paralympic cycling champion Kadeena Cox for a series of lighthearted gymnastic and cycling challenges.
“I’ve always loved a challenge and Team GB and ParalympicsGB athletes certainly know a thing or two about stepping up to the plate,” Branson stated. “I’m thrilled that Virgin Atlantic gets to be such an important part of their journey to the Games. We’ll be backing them all the way – from check-in and take-off to what I hope will be a very special journey home.”
Expanding the Fan Experience and Accessibility
The deal stretches far beyond the tarmac. Virgin Atlantic Holidays has secured its place as the official holiday partner, a strategic move designed to offer sports fans curated travel packages and trips to California for the upcoming summer Olympiad. Beyond ferrying competitors across the Atlantic, the airline will actively participate in official team announcements and homecoming celebrations.
Team GB Chair Dame Katherine Grainger emphasized the logistical and emotional weight of the partnership as preparations ramp up for Los Angeles.
“Getting Team GB to a Games is a huge team effort long before competition begins, so having Virgin Atlantic with us on the journey to Los Angeles is incredibly exciting,” Grainger noted. “From supporting the team’s travel to helping us celebrate the moments and people that make a Games so special, we’re looking forward to bringing fans even closer to Team GB on the road to LA28.”
Meanwhile, ParalympicsGB chief executive David Clarke underscored a strong commitment to inclusivity within the new corporate alliance, highlighting joint efforts aimed at reshaping long-haul transit standards.
“Not only will we work together to take our team to and from the games, but crucially, the partnership will see our teams working closely together to help make air travel more accessible and inclusive for everyone,” Clarke said.
The SkyTeam Integration and Strategic Momentum
This high-stakes sponsorship follows a period of aggressive structural growth for Virgin Atlantic, which officially became a full member of the global SkyTeam airline alliance following a formal signing ceremony in London. Operating alongside key joint-venture partners like Delta Air Lines and Air France-KLM, the carrier has steadily fortified its transatlantic network out of London Heathrow and Manchester.

Yet, as check-in for LA28 officially opens, Virgin Atlantic is betting its modern fleet—featuring advanced Airbus and Boeing aircraft—and its expanding alliance footprint will deliver a seamless experience for the nation’s elite competitors.
