Virginia Garrone from Cordoba continues to write her history in swimming, almost 30 years after having even become the first swimmer to win eight gold medals in a South American event (Peru 1994).

Now, at 44 and as the mother of three children, the native of Bell Ville is competing in the World Masters in Japan and has already climbed three podiums: she opened her account with gold in the 100-meter freestyle, she was once again crowned world champion in the 50 butterfly and won the silver medal in the 50-meter freestyle.

The incredible thing is that her times are not far from those she had as an elite swimmer and she even won the 50-meter butterfly with the same time she swam the distance at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, at the age of 21.

Now she competes in the category between 45 and 49 years of the Kyushu World Masters, which happens on the calendar to the absolute World Cup in Fukuoka where there were three Cordovan women.

There were 61 swimmers in the event and the Cordovan woman was followed on the podium by Susana Gomes from Portugal (29.84) and Shauna Krkalo from Hong Kong (29.99).

Silver in 50 meter freestyle

With a time of 27.87 in the 50-meter freestyle, Garrone escorted the native of Shauna Krkalo (27.65) to the podium and placed ahead of the local Izumi Kihara (28.68) among 130 swimmers.
