Virginia Volleyball Falls to Florida State in Four Sets: Match Recap and Stats

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Virginia volleyball team (9-15, 2-12 ACC) fell to Florida State (18-8, 12-2 ACC) on the road on Sunday (Nov. 5) in four sets (26-28, 14-25, 25-12, 8-25).

Abby Tadder recorded 14 kills and three blocks while Milan Gomillion led Virginia’s defense with a match-high 25 digs.

Set 1: Florida State 28, Virginia 26
Virginia opened up to a good offensive performance and held a lead late in the opening frame [20-16] but was unable to put away Florida State as they chipped away at the lead, leveling things at 26-26. Virginia recorded a service error and attack error on the final two plays in set No. 1. Ciera Hecht threw down three kills on a .300 hitting clip while Ashley Le assisted 11 of UVA’s 19 kills.

Set 2: Florida State 25, Virginia 14
Despite Virginia’s .094 hitting percentage, the Hoos were able to stay within striking distance of the Seminoles for a majority of the second set. With Virginia down 17-13, Florida State’s offense exploded, ending the second frame scoring eight points unanswered to claim a 2-0 advantage. FSU recorded 6.5 blocks to Virginia’s 0.0.

Set 3: Virginia 25, Florida State 12
The Hoos were able to swing momentum their way after they opened up the third set on a 9-1 scoring run, which included Lauryn Bowie and Abby Tadder teaming up for three blocks. UVA held Florida State at an arm’s length for the entirety of the set and shut down any comeback attempt swiftly. Tadder tallied four kills on six swings (.667 hitting percentage) to go along with three blocks.

Set 4: Florida State 25, Virginia 8
Virginia led only once in the final frame [2-1] before Florida State was able to spark numerous scoring runs that the Hoos could not match. The Seminoles ended the set on a 17-3 run to seal the victory. Virginia hit -.034 percent to FSU’s .542 percent in set No. 4.

MATCH NOTES

With the win, Florida State extends its all-time series lead over the Cavaliers, 43-16.
Virginia won a set at Florida State for the first time since 10/4/19.
Milan Gomillion led all players in digs with 25.
Ashley Le led all players in assists with 27.

The Hoos return to Memorial Gymnasium on Sunday, Nov. 12 for a matchup with Notre Dame (10-12, 4-10 ACC). First serve is set for 1 p.m.
