Vision Pro: Apple TV app gains support for 3D movies in tvOS 17.2 beta

Some films are already being listed on the application Apple TV common icon in the metadata section indicating compatibility with playback on 3D no Vision Pro. The novelty, noticed for the first time for the FlatpanelsHD in the beta version of tvOS 17.2comes months before the launch of Maçã’s mixed reality (AR/VR) headset, scheduled for early 2024.

As you can see below, the icon in question has the silhouette of the Vision Pro and has the inscription “3D” centered. It appears right next to other icons that indicate the compatibility of the media being viewed with features such as Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and 4K playback.

This 3D icon is now live in the Apple TV app.

Among the films compatible with 3D playback in Vision Pro identified so far are titles such as “Jurassic World – Domain”, “Ring of Fire – The Revolt”, “Minions 2: The Origin of Gru” e “Shrek”. As it is not possible to play these feature films in this format without a Vision Pro or a developer kit, however, the FlatpanelsHD could not confirm the resolution or display frame rate by default.

The possibility of playing extremely immersive 3D movies was one of the capabilities highlighted by Apple at the presentation of Vision Pro, during WWDC23. On that occasion, the company used the film “Avatar: The Path of Water” as an example — which, interestingly, still doesn’t appear to support 3D playback in the Apple TV app.

This is also not the first time that a reference to 3D films has been found on an Apple system: in July, the developer Steve Moser found an icon in the Apple TV app where you could read the phrase “Play 3D” (something like “Play in 3D”). This discovery suggested that the company could automatically make films and series available in 3D versions, if they were already compatible with this format.

O FlatpanelsHD it also floated the possibility of Apple letting users play 3D movies through the Apple TV itself, without the need for a headset. Although there is no evidence to support this, this rumor could mean a possible return of 3D televisions — one of the great failures of recent decades.

So let’s wait.
