Vitamin D: when supplements help

It is true that vitamin D preparations make sense in risk groups and a proven deficiency. However, if the body produces enough vitamin D itself, taking too much of it can even be harmful, warns the health magazine “Apotheken Umschau”.

“Office stools” are at risk for vitamin D deficiency

The human body forms vitamin D itself under the influence of sunlight – hence the common name “sun hormone”. Depending on the skin type, spending between five and 30 minutes outdoors twice a week is enough to form enough of it, preferably without sun protection and with uncovered arms, legs and head. Caution: Avoid sunburn at all costs! From around March to October, the body can produce vitamin D itself in the local latitudes. During this time he also builds up reserves in fat and muscle tissue for the winter months.

If a deficiency is suspected or if people are at risk, the family doctor will test vitamin D with a blood sample. It has been proven that vitamin D can protect against bone loss and prevent fractures. According to studies, it can also help older people against acute colds – if there is a vitamin D deficiency. Risk groups for undersupply include chronically ill people who spend little or no time outdoors, as well as older people from around 65 years of age. “Office stools” who only sit in darkened rooms and don’t get enough fresh air also have a risk of vitamin D deficiency.

Beware of unauthorized dosages

However, vitamin D preparations are not the miracle cure they are often touted as for various diseases. Experts warn against taking the vitamin on your own. Higher doses should only be taken under medical supervision and taking into account the individual vitamin D status. Unauthorized dosages with preparations over 4000 international units (IU) must therefore be avoided at all costs – side effects such as abdominal cramps, nausea and kidney stones can be the result. Tip: Talk to your doctor before you take vitamin D supplements. Professionals can help assess needs and recommend the right dosage.
