Frugal leader or dissembler? Ahead of the presidential elections in Russia in March, the electoral commission published Vladimir Putin’s financial declaration on Thursday February 1. In this document, the Russian president claims to have earned 67.6 million rubles over the last six years, or approximately 694,421 euros. He also claims to own an apartment of 77 m2, a garage of 18 m2 in Saint Petersburg, savings of $606,000 in ten Russian bank accounts, two GAZ M-21 cars manufactured in 1960 and 1965, a camping caravan from 1987 and a 2009 Lada Niva.

Statements that contrast with the investigations of several independent media and political opponents. His main opponent, anti-corruption activist Alexeï Navalny, had accused Vladimir Putin of owning a palace worth 1.5 billion euros on the shores of the Black Sea. This “most expensive palace in the world” with, among other things, vineyards, an ice hockey hall and a casino, is located on an estate 39 times larger than Monaco. Alexeï Navalny’s anti-corruption foundation returned to the charge in August 2023, accusing the Russian leader of owning at least two yachts with a total value of 600 million euros.
