Volcano Eruption in Iceland: Live Updates and News Coverage

2023-12-18 23:59:29

A volcano has erupted in Iceland following strong seismic activity. The eruption began yesterday evening a few kilometers northeast of the municipality of Grindavik, near the capital Reykjavik, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Institute.

Images and a livestream broadcast by Archyde.com showed molten rock bubbling like fountains from cracks in the ground, their bright yellow and orange colors contrasting sharply with the dark night sky.

There had been a series of earthquakes in the region in November, which was why a volcanic eruption was expected. The authorities therefore declared a state of emergency and the town of Grindavik, with around 4,000 residents, was evacuated. The current volcanic eruption is the fourth in Iceland in three years.

The red warning level was declared for aviation yesterday evening. However, the airport operator Isavia stated on its website that there are currently no disruptions to take-offs and landings at Keflavik International Capital Airport.
