Volkswagen plans to open two new plants in North America to further the company’s plans for electric vehicles, CNBC reports.
The German company said Friday, March 3, that it plans to open a $2 billion assembly plant in South Carolina to produce new electric models for its Scout brand.
He noted that this investment could create more than 200,000 exploratory vehicles for 4,000 or more permanent jobs.
The company plans to start work on the plant in mid-2023, while production is expected to start by the end of 2026.
Volkswagen is also looking for a location for a new battery plant in North America.
The company believes the shift to electric vehicles is worth entering into a market where it has historically been hurt, and Volkswagen is the fourth largest seller of electric vehicles in the United States.
