Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5: Power Boost and Improved Features to Challenge Tesla Model Y in Europe

2023-09-07 09:07:24

While the Tesla Model Y remains at the top of electric sales in Europe, the Volkswagen ID.4 is not far behind. The electric SUV offers some improvements, including an increase in power to try to overtake its rival. The cut version, the ID.5 benefits from the same improvements.

It’s a fact, the Tesla Model Y is very popular and dominates the market. The sales figures for July in Europe confirmed this again, since the electric SUV was registered at 11,317 copies. But just behind, with 8,872 units sold, the Volkswagen ID.4 is ready to take its place… The ID.5, the coupe version, sells a little less well, but it still appeals to European customers.

An increase in power

Truth be told, the German electric SUV isn’t missing much to try to equalize with its rival from the United States, which is priced slightly higher. For memory, the ID.4 starts from 44,000 euros, compared to 45,990 euros for the Model Y, which has suffered several price drops in recent months. But the German firm wants to offer other arguments to its electric bestseller.

In a communiquéthe latter indeed announces a series of improvements on its SUV, whether it is the ID.4 but also the ID.5. A news that comes as the brand is currently present at the Munich show, with its ID.7 as well as its ID concept. GTI, among others. But what is it? Please note, there is no question of restyling, which should take place a little later. This could make the ID.4 evolve in depth, in order to give it a more conventional style.

But for the moment, it’s time for changes under the hood, even if this new version is equipped with new rims. The rival electric SUV of the Kia EV6, and other Hyundai Ioniq 5 offers a brand new, more efficient powertrain. The latter passes the propulsion version equipped with the 82 kWh battery to 286 horsepower, up from 204 horsepower previously.

The variant with all-wheel drive also increases strongly in power, sinceit goes from 299 to 335 horsepower. It is not known, however, to what extent this development improves the performance of the car, while Volkswagen has not given any information on this subject. For the record, the 0 to 100 km / h is achieved between 6.2 and 8.5 seconds with the largest battery.

Increased autonomy

But that’s not the only good news. And for good reason, the Wolfsburg firm also announces that this new, more efficient engine would improve the autonomy of his car. However, the official figures have not yet been released. For the record, this currently oscillates between 410 and 443 kilometers according to the European WLTP cycle. The charging power increases from 110 to 115 kW for the small battery.

The propulsion version of the ID.4 Pro can reach 135 kW of rechargingbut Volkswagen does not specify the new charging time, as the site explains Electrive. Note that the power of the version with the 62 kWh battery does not change one iota. But that’s not all, because the driving position also benefits from some fairly discreet developments all the same.

If the ID.4 with the small battery retains its 12-inch touch screen, the 82 kWh version is available a new, more practical 12.9-inch display with the new Software operating system in version 4.0. A way for the brand to respond to criticism of its infotainment system deemed too difficult to use. The menu has been modified, as have the controls for the air conditioning (it is not known if they are finally backlit, as on the ID.7), while the gear selector is new.

The S trim gets ventilated seats and the S Plus variant gets a Harman/Kardon audio system. For now, the prices of this reworked ID.4 have not yet been announced, but they should logically be revised slightly upwards. It should be noted that these developments concern the American market, but it is not excluded that France will benefit from them in stride.
