The Volkswagen company has long been a leader in the Chinese automobile market, but in recent years it has been rapidly losing ground. To regain its former leadership, Volkswagen has already invested $1.1 billion in a new technical center in China and is ready to invest an additional 2.5 billion euros. All in order to reduce the development time of new electric vehicles intended for the dynamic local market by 30%. And what these cars will look like was shown by the Volkswagen ID concept car. Code, presented at the Beijing Auto Show.

The brand’s new design concept was developed by Volkswagen’s global design team led by Andreas Mindt, who moved from Bentley in early 2023. When creating the concept ID. Code paid particular attention to the soft contours of the body and the rapidity of the lines, so that it looks more like a Gran Turismo car than a banal family crossover. Widened wheel arches and large wheels add greater sportiness and visual solidity. And the continuity of the style is ensured by the curvature of the rear pillar, which echoes the Golf.

Particular attention is paid to the interaction of an electric vehicle with a person. For example, at the front there are not only Light Cloud headlights, but also special 3D Eyes LED strips and an additional LED display. All of this equipment can not only broadcast an audiovisual greeting when the owner approaches, but also display the weather forecast or interact with other drivers in traffic.

The interior has so far only been worked out in the form of renderings, although it is made in keeping with the times and contains nothing revolutionary. The minimalist space is generously adorned with touchscreens, including one that spans the entire width of the front panel. But here artificial intelligence lives in the form of an avatar, acting as a virtual assistant. Thanks to it, you can control the fourth level autopilot, receive information about the road situation, and also communicate with other drivers using the smart lighting technology mentioned above.

In autopilot mode, the driver and passengers can relax or go about their business. To do this, the helm is removed out of sight, the front seats swivel 180 degrees or can be folded into a sleeping position, providing lounge comfort.

A new family of electric vehicles called ID.UX was also announced at the Beijing Auto Show. The first model will be the ID.Unyx crossover, and although it has not yet been officially presented, the car was released in March declassified in the certification base of the People’s Republic of China. In total, by 2030, Volkswagen promises to introduce 16 new ID family models in China. Twelve new fuel products and six hybrids will be delivered within the same time frame. Such fertility should be facilitated by a partnership with the Chinese company Xpeng.
