Volkswagen will unveil the people’s electric car

On March 15, Volkswagen will present a concept prefiguring the ID.2, a small electric compact which should have well-placed prices.

On its social networks, Volkswagen has “teased” a big announcement, scheduled for Wednesday March 15 (at precisely 6:20 p.m.). The brand has indicated that it will discuss its “vision for the future” and its “new design”. With a slogan “More 2 come 4 you” (more to come for you).

A countdown also starts at 4 and stops at… 2. Volkswagen therefore seems to be highlighting this figure. It does not take much more to say that it will be about the ID.2! However, it is an announcing concept that we should discover.

Our colleagues from Autocar had mentioned this a few weeks ago when giving new information on the project, which would have caused some turmoil internally, because of the mixed reception reserved for the ID.Life concept.

This one looked like a crossover. The project would therefore have been completely redesigned, and reoriented towards a look of a small compact. So much so that the production model could have been called ID.Golf.

Moreover, another element of the teaser attracts attention, the hashtag “vwforthepeople”. It would therefore be the great return of the people’s car at Volkswagen, but this time in a 100% electric version. The ID.2 should have the mission of democratizing access to the connected vehicle at VW, with a starting price of around €25,000.

It should be noted, however, that this mission originally seemed to devolve on the ID.3. When VW presented the concept foreshadowing this model in 2016, it placed it in an image next to the first Beetle and the first Golf. But the price positioning of the production model, not helped in addition by soaring production costs, has moved away from this objective of democratizing electricity.

The ID.2 could set the record straight, while the competition is also getting organized.
