Vox Proposes to End Granting Spanish Nationality to Individuals from Muslim Countries: Controversial Move Sparks Human Rights Concerns

In relation to the conflict between Israel and Palestinian Hamas, the Spanish far-right party, Vox, submitted a proposal to Congress to end the granting of Spanish nationality and residency permits to individuals from countries with “Muslim culture”, including Moroccans.

The radical party Vox has submitted a proposal to Congress to suspend “ files and procedures for acquiring Spanish nationality and residence permits, but also stay“. He also wishes “ prohibit the entry into Spain of immigrants from countries of Islamic culture if it is not possible to guarantee their correct and peaceful integration« .

The formation, led by Santiago Abascal, justified its decision by affirming that the attack in Brussels, during which an individual opened fire, causing the death of two people, resulted directly from what they described as ” open door policy in force in much of Europe« .

« Yes, we must defeat them, yes, all the criminals who bring hatred, pain and death. And if possible, we must defeat them before they kill a single innocent“wrote Abascal in a post on his X account (formerly Twitter).

Furthermore, Spanish jurists consulted by the Iberian media consider this proposal to be institutional and contrary to international pacts relating to human rights and the laws of the country.

That said, the former president of the Association of Human Rights in Spain perceives this initiative as an open declaration of hostility towards foreigners, and as being in disagreement with international agreements on civil, political, social rights and cultural laws promulgated by the United Nations in 1966. This perspective could lead to Spain being condemned by the UN if such a proposal were to be accepted.

For his part, Augustin Ruiz Robledo, professor of constitutional law at the University of Granada, warns in a statement to “El País” against any form of discrimination against a person because of their origin from a country with a Muslim culture, emphasizing that this contravenes Article 16 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to religious freedom. Diego López Garrido, professor of constitutional law at the University of Castilla-La Mancha, believes that such a measure transgresses the European Convention on Human Rights, incorporated into Spanish legislation.

Furthermore, “El País” points out that the Vox party, in the introduction to its proposal, confuses citizens of Muslim countries and “jihadist terrorism”. They recall that according to the National Institute of Statistics, Spain recorded an increase of 26%, and a third of the new nationalities were awarded to people of Moroccan origin.

« Lhe most common nationality of origin among those who obtained Spanish nationality in 2022 was Moroccan nationality, with 55,453 cases, or 30.5% of the total“, specified the Iberian media.
