VP-Engelberg: "SPÖ tries to discredit the protection of the constitution"

The instrumentalization of commemoration work for party political purposes is irresponsible and should be rejected. The Office for the Protection of the Constitution is doing an excellent job.

Vienna (OTS) – “The SPÖ is trying to discredit the protection of the constitution. The red FSG trade unionist and chairman of the ‘Mauthausen Committee Austria’ Willi Merny, Robert Eiter, who works in the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labour, and Sabine Schatz, member of the SPÖ, are pursuing party politics with their criticism of the security authorities and the Ministry of the Interior, which is unacceptable. It is irresponsible to exploit the desecration of memorial sites in Mauthausen in the cheapest possible way,” says Martin Engelberg, MP of the ÖVP.

“The SPÖ’s claim that the Office for the Protection of the Constitution is inactive in investigating and prosecuting criminal offenses in and around the Mauthausen Memorial is simply wrong. The Office for the Protection of the Constitution follows every report meticulously and also implements extensive preventive measures. In the past year alone, investigations were conducted against more than 660 people from the right-wing extremist field, more than 100 house searches were carried out and 37 arrests were made,” Martin Engelberg continued.

Finally, Engelberg demands: “There must finally be an end to misusing the joint fight against right-wing extremism and commemoration work for party political purposes!”
