At the federal conference of the Association of Socialist Students in Austria, the Viennese woman was confirmed as federal chairwoman.

Vienna (OTS) – Yesterday, Saturday, the 89th Ordinary Federal Conference of the Association of Socialist Students in Austria (VSStÖ) took place. The national conference was all about an anniversary – 130 years of VSStÖ. Delegates from all over Austria came together in Vienna to set the course for the work in the coming year, to decide on the focal points and to elect a new national team. Hannah Czernohorszky, a student doing her Masters in Political Science, was confirmed as Federal Chair. For another year, the 23-year-old Viennese will be the loud voice of the students for free, open and inclusive universities as well as social security and an affordable life. “As expected, the cost of living and the energy crisis hit students hard. In addition to the immense mental stress, many students were pushed to the poverty line, but the federal government is giving us the cold shoulder,” says Hannah Czernohorszky about her election. “The past year has shown that we need a social university policy that really addresses the realities of life for us students and leaves no one behind. I look forward to being able to work on shaping this university policy for another year as federal chairperson.”

As Federal President, Hannah Czernohorszky and her team can look back on a successful ÖH election in spring. The VSStÖ was able to record strong increases in votes at many university locations in Austria and, with 26.52% of the votes at national level, achieved its best ever result. With the 22-year-old environmental engineering student Nina Mathies in the chair team, the VSStÖ will continue its work in the executive of the federal representation in a coalition with the green and the communist students in the coming period. “The students have expressed their trust in us. That’s certainly a reason to celebrate, but also a mission. We have the task of giving everything for the students next year, not to allow any injustice and to make the universities a better place step by step with our socialist policy,” says Hannah Czernohorskzy, commenting on the election result. “For 130 years we have been fighting for social security for all students and for an education system in which everyone has the same opportunities, no matter how much money their parents have or what is in their passport. With a decidedly left-wing and socio-political program, we will continue to devote ourselves to the task of realizing this for the next two years,” adds ÖH chairwoman Nina Mathies.

In addition to the federal chairwoman, Hannah Czernhorszky, the delegates at yesterday’s federal conference elected Jasmin Kunze, a master’s student in spatial planning and spatial planning, to be the deputy chairwoman and feminist spokeswoman. She follows Hannah Müllner, who is leaving the national team. Benno Kossatz, a student at the TU, was confirmed as federal secretary. Marie Pointner, also a student at the TU, was entrusted with her position as university political spokesperson for another year, as was musicology student Mary Weitzer as international secretary. The team is supplemented by queer spokesperson Hannah Gratl, political student Very Mertel as social spokesperson and Paula Rossi, who will take on the position of press officer. As the new chairwoman of the Austrian Union of Students, Nina Mathies will also remain active on the national board of the VSStÖ. The national team also says goodbye to former ÖH chairwoman Sara Velić and former press spokesman Lukas Bickel, who have accompanied the team over the past two years.

“In times of inflation, energy crisis and climate crisis, it is of great importance that a progressive and critical voice is represented in university politics. And that’s why we will continue to be loud for the rights of students. We are determined to work day in day out for a fairer future and to help those who are most severely affected by the effects of the multiple crises,” emphasizes the newly elected federal team.

The new federal team would like to thank all the outgoing officials and wish them all the best on their further journey.
