After a weak start, the “Eagles” improved, but in the end had to accept a narrow 2:3 defeat in the penalty shootout.
The “Adlers” started with a lot of enthusiasm against HC Pustertal, where EC VSV goalie Andreas Bernard started in goal. Alexander Rauchwald fired the first dangerous shot in the second minute, but Bernard was there to save the game. In return, VSV goalie JP Lamoureux had to show off his skills twice during quick counter-attacks by the guests in order to prevent the South Tyroleans from taking the lead. Otherwise, the big goal scenes were missing in the opening minutes. Until the 10th minute: The guests celebrated the supposed opening goal, but the goal was disallowed by the referees because it was offside. But just a minute later the goal counted – the scorer to make it 0-1 was former “Eagle” Rick Schofield. Six seconds before the end, Dylan MacPherson made the VSV fans cheer and scored the 1-1 with a long-range shot.
In the middle section, it wasn’t VSV at the beginning, but the guests who had more of the game and also the better chances to score. In the 24th minute, VSV goalie Lamoureux once again had to make a desperate save from a shot by David Morley and prevented the South Tyroleans from taking the lead again. But this time it was the “Eagles” who scored with the first real chance to score in the second third to make it 2-1. Philipp Lindner scored the goal with a shot from the blue line. In addition, Maxi Rebernig took a perfect view of Pustertal goalie Bernard. After that, the blue and whites noticeably increased the tempo, were now the better team and created one scoring opportunity after the other. Wall, Sabolic or Kulda, they all had good opportunities to score the next Villach goal. But after 40 minutes, Villach’s lead remained 2-1.
In the final third, the Blue-Whites pushed vehemently for a preliminary decision and were unable to take advantage of several good chances to score. However, the guests scored their next goal on the counterattack – this time the scorer was David Morley (45th). The “Eagles” reacted and continued to press for the renewed leadership. However, no more goals were scored in regular time or in the subsequent 3-on-3 overtime. In the shootout, the guests from South Tyrol had the better end – while the blue-whites were unable to convert all three penalties, David Morley scored for a 2-3 victory.
