AI-Powered Computing Revolutionizes Energy Modeling at National Lab
Morgantown, WV – July 1, 2025 – A collaborative effort between the Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) and the artificial intelligence firm Cerebras Systems Inc.is dramatically accelerating the pace of energy innovation. Since its inception in late 2019, the partnership has yielded significant breakthroughs in computational modeling, promising faster development of advanced energy technologies.
The core of this advancement lies in Cerebras’ Wafer-Scale Engine (WSE), a novel computing architecture. Initial assessments revealed the WSE to be hundreds of times faster than conventional high-performance computing systems traditionally used by NETL, while together consuming substantially less energy. This efficiency sparked a continuing partnership focused on harnessing the WSE’s capabilities.
Decades of Modeling, amplified by AI
For over three decades, NETL has been a leader in modeling complex energy systems using its Multiphase Flow with Interphase eXchanges (mfix) software. MFiX is a powerful
