Wallonia Increases APA Allowance for Elderly on Low Income: Latest Poverty Thresholds

The Walloon government, on the proposal of the Minister of Social Action Christie Morreale, recorded, on Thursday, an increase in the ceilings of the APA – the allowance for assistance to the elderly – based on the latest published poverty thresholds .

This allowance is intended for people aged 65 or over, on low income and who have to face additional costs due to a reduction in their autonomy. In Wallonia, this additional income concerns around 35,000 elderly people who live at home or in a nursing home.

“It was important to rebalance the situation for elderly people who were losing access to this allowance even though they really need it, given their low pension. The decision taken by the Federal Government to increase the minimum pension could not have negative effects. We have therefore positively corrected the situation,” underlined Minister Morreale in a press release.
